Apple Unveils ‘Siri AI’: A Conversational, Gemini-Powered Assistant with On-Device and Cloud Smarts
Published on: June 12, 2026
At WWDC 2026, Apple introduced Siri AI, a significant overhaul of its long-standing virtual assistant. The new version, backed by Google’s Gemini-based foundation models, is designed to understand multi-step tasks and maintain context across interactions—bringing a chatbot-like experience to Apple devices. Siri AI will be deeply integrated across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, operating both on-device and in Apple’s secure cloud infrastructure to preserve user privacy.
Apple’s updated platform—branded Apple Intelligence—leverages an orchestration system to deliver tailored AI responses depending on the active app and user task. This system balances computation between on-device processing and Apple’s Private Cloud Compute network. Apple emphasized that user data isn’t stored or accessed beyond immediate requests, and these privacy guarantees can be independently verified.
Siri AI’s rollout will begin with a public beta in July, followed by a full release in September alongside the launch of the iPhone 18. The assistant will initially support English, with other languages added over time. However, availability will be limited on older hardware: only devices meeting specific chip and memory requirements—such as newer iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches—will access the full-featured version, while older models will receive a pared-down variant.
The assistant introduces a range of enhancements including more expressive voice output, improved dictation with better punctuation and spelling, improved image understanding, realistic image generation, and features like spatial reframing for photo editing. It also supports automating workflows via natural language commands that span multiple apps—simplifying complex tasks with intuitive voice prompts.
Apple framed Siri AI as a user-centered alternative to competitors it said were “racing forward” with AI without sufficient regard for privacy or control. By keeping core processing on-device and minimizing reliance on cloud inference, Apple positions its approach as one that privileges user trust and data security while delivering modern AI capabilities.
