OpenAI has launched a specialized version of its GPT‑5.6 Sol model, dubbed GPT‑5.6‑Cyber, aimed at enhancing cybersecurity defenses. The model is delivered under the company’s Daybreak initiative and is accessible only to approved cyber defenders. This move addresses concerns that standard guardrails can impede proactive defensive work while safeguarding against misuse.
GPT‑5.6‑Cyber comes with relaxed restrictions compared to typical AI deployments, enabling it to respond to advanced security‑related prompts. In internal testing, it complied with 95 percent of expert‑level cybersecurity requests, including exploit‑chain development, authentication bypass strategies, and privilege escalation scenarios.
This deployment follows OpenAI’s delay of its upcoming “Astra” model, which was paused due to concerns over its own critical cyber capabilities. That earlier decision highlighted growing caution as AI systems gain the ability to execute sophisticated hacking tasks autonomously.
